  • Quality cabin, elegant exterior styling, excellent drivetrains
  • Not the most exciting BMW to drive…

Design

Again, this is an area where the Four outdoes its forebears, as this is one of the most appealing creations to come out of Munich during head of design Adrian van Hooydonk’s watch (the 4 Series is credited to Nicolas Huet). The Convertible retains a folding metal hardtop similar to the preceding E93 3 Series Convertible, meaning it should be fine for all weathers.

The Gran Coupé pulls off a remarkable visual trick – despite looking longer than the two-door Coupé, the GC is exactly the same width and length, and it has the same wheelbase (2810mm, the same as that of an A5 Sportback) too. That allows the GC to carry as much luggage as a regular 3 Series Saloon, at 480 litres. The extra doors on the GC account for a 60kg weight gain over the two-door mode though. Strong colours and big wheels suit it – M Sport spec makes the 4 Series look superb. The 2017 facelift brought about a fresh aesthetic, including smart-looking LED lights.
