BMW M3 Le Mans Art Car

BMW's latest Art Car - a 500bhp V8 M3 GT2 - is revealed. The coolest car racing at the 2010 Le Mans 24 hours

BMW has unveiled its latest Art Car. And it’s a pretty special one – the 17th in a line of specially designed, one-off cars will be competing at the 2010 Le Mans 24-hour race. And being based on a BMW M3 GT2, it should do rather well. A similar (if not quite as vibrant) car won the Nurburgring 24 hours a couple of weeks ago, so its stamina and solidity are proven. It has been designed by Jeff Koons, and has been months in the making. His design process included experiencing the ‘raw unfiltered performance’ of an M3 GT2 at race speed, as well as taking an M3 Coupe on track to further explore its dynamics. Sounds like an excuse to have fun to us… Lying beneath the eye-grabbing paintwork is a 4-litre V8 engine with an output of 500bhp, enough for a 3.4sec sprint to 62mph. As you’d expect, there’s an upgraded chassis, ultra-tough racing-caliper brakes and a host of lightweight materials and technology. The 2010 Le Mans 24 hours takes place on June 12 and 13, and the M3 GT2 (numbered 79) will be piloted by Germans Dirk Muller and Dirk Werner and Brit Andy Priaulx, so it’s certainly worth your support. Click here to find out about the GT2’s win at the Ring Read the rest of our Le Mans 24-hour race news here
