Performance and 0-60 time

The A5 shares its engines with the rest of the cars on the same platform – the A4, A4 Avant, A5 Sportback, and A5 convertible. The entry-level petrol engine provides 187bhp, with 230Nm of torque available – enabling a 0-62mph sprint of 7.3 seconds. The higher-powered petrol cuts that to 5.8 seconds thanks to its 249bhp and 370Nm of torque.

On the diesel front, the A4’s entry-level 148bhp 2.0-litre has been ditched in favour of a 187bhp version, which makes use of its 400Nm of torque to sprint to 62mph in 7.2 seconds. Step up one more level and you’ll find a 215bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel paired exclusively with quattro four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. Currently there are no performance figures for this engine but in the A4 it manages 6.3 seconds from 0-62mph.

Up from there is the S5, which uses a 349bhp 3-litre turbocharged V6 to push the car from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. The halo RS5 ups that to 444bhp, and cuts 0-62mph acceleration to an electrifying 3.9 seconds.
