Audi A3 Sportback review - how does premium hatchback compete against rivals? - Prices, specs and rivals

Pragmatic Sportback is no more fun to drive than an A3

Evo rating
RRP
from £19,985
  • High quality interior, excellent drivetrains, relaxed driving manners
  • Chassis lacks sparkle, exterior looks slightly ungainly

Prices, Specs and Rivals

The Sportback admission fee is nominally £19,985 for the 1.0-litre TFSI manual in SE specification with absolutely nothing added to it, but every version has a five-figure purchase price beginning with a two, including the 2.0 TDI quattro S line – which is a 'robust' £29,385.

Like all Audis, expensive options can quickly bump the ticket up but even base specifications are pretty comprehensive. SE cars come with MMI, Bluetooth, DAB, 16-inch alloys and manual air conditioning, while SE Technik (+£750) adds satnav and cruise control. Sport (+£1500 on a standard SE) brings 17-inch wheels, 15mm lower sports suspension, Audi Drive Select, sports seats and climate control, while top-ranking S line (£2150 above a Sport) adds 18-inch alloys, half-leather upholstery and S line specific exterior and interior styling.

The main rivals are the rear-wheel drive BMW 1 Series, the prettier Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the enemy within: the cheaper Volkswagen Golf MkVII.
