New Mazda MX-5 spawns Alfa Romeo roadster

The new Mazda MX-5 will spawn a rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo roadster as car makers join forces

Alfa Romeo Spider

Alfa Romeo is set to develop a new roadster in conjunction with Mazda’s new MX-5. As part of a non-binding agreement between Fiat Group and Mazda, the two firms are set to develop two ‘distinctly-styled’ and ‘iconic’ rear-wheel drive roadsters. While both cars are set to receive engines unique to their brand, it has been mooted that both cars will be made at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant, with Alfa’s set to start production in 2015. Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi has said it is ‘especially exciting to be collaborating with such a prestigious marque as Alfa Romeo on a new roadster based on the next-generation MX-5.’ Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne predicts great benefits also: ‘We will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster.’            The final agreement on the alliance should be signed later in the year.
